Pentecost 2020 - a Great Awakening?

Brothers & Sisters in Christ,

God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

That is Paul speaking to the church at Philippi while in prison.   Although I am not writing you this note from prison, we are all somewhat isolated as we continue to practice physical distancing because of our love for our neighbours.

I do long to be with you in person once again and look forward to the day that we can worship together in body and in spirit.

I share Paul's prayer to the Philippians with you, my Covenant Family:

Right after that prayer, Paul goes on to encourage the Philippians by saying that his imprisonment has not STOPPED the gospel from going forward --- it has only served to advance the gospel.

Philippians 1:14 (NIV)

And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.

Now I'm not suggesting that "we are in chains," but things have certainly changed during this time of COVID-19.  It is right for us and fitting to lament and grieve all the losses we have endured and will continue to endure, but I wanted to encourage you by reminding you that our Risen and Ascended LORD reigns from the throne and is in full control.   I also wonder how many "new" people around the world are listening to all the worship services being recorded and made possible. In my chats with many of you, you are certainly not missing out on worship.  So many have shared that they watch our worship services and other worship services either on TV, radio or internet.   That is so wonderful!  In some ways, we are being fed more now than before.

Please be in prayer for those people who will come to know Christ through this time.   Maybe there is no sports available, and they stumble upon (Yeah Right--- God leads them to)  a worship service.

  • A worship service that includes the gospel message all throughout its elements.
  • A worship service that shows how the body of Christ is alive and well even though we can't worship in a physical building right now.

Maybe they will see how the church is essential and that the body of Jesus Christ is indeed beautiful!

We certainly don't need any president, prime minister, governor or premier to tell us that we are essential.   And to those who say the church is closed right now, THAT IS SO FALSE!  We are "Open for business" --- "Open for Ministry" and that will never stop.

The gates of hell will never prevail against the Church of Jesus Christ!

Brothers & Sisters,  we are in strange times and I can't help but notice the timing of this Pandemic for us.  I know it started in some parts of the world a little earlier, but for most of the world, this plague hit us right during LENT, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.  Maybe Satan had big plans for crippling the body of Christ.   NOT GUNNA HAPPEN!   We are going to make it through this Plague/Pandemic stronger than ever!

That's why I'm wondering about Pentecost this year!

Could this year be more than just a remembrance of that great event in our churches' history where God poured out his Spirit on all flesh?

A lot of people, myself included, have been praying for revival ---

  • personal revival
  • local church revival
  • local community revival
  •  worldwide church revival
  • and a World wide renewal where God turns millions of hearts back to him.

I've never really been a part of one of those "Great Awakenings" and would love to be.   Wouldn't that be cool?

Please pray with me as we "wait and pray" for Pentecost 2020!   Pray that God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh and that there will be another Great Awakening.   And if it doesn't turn out to be God's timing, that's okay!  We will continue to rely on His leading and guiding and encouraging through the power of His Holy Spirit both individually and as the body of Christ.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor John
